Common Mistakes Made By New Avon Representatives

Avon is a wonderful business. I love my Avon business, and it has treated Richard and me well. Even during the time when we weren’t actively working our Avon business, we still earned more with Avon than with any other company.

We’ve been with Avon 19 years and have learned a lot along the way. Sometimes, we’ve had to learn the hard way, and so I’d like to make it as easy as possible for you to learn from my mistakes. 🙂

In an effort to help you be the most successful in your Avon business, here are some tips of common errors, and how to avoid them.

Be Careful About Spending Your Profits

Getting a discount on your Avon products is part of the allure that makes selling Avon so attractive at first.

And we always tell you to use and wear Avon. But, especially when you’re new, you want to be careful about how much you spend on your Avon products. Anything you spend comes from your earnings. When you look at your earnings, you need to account for what you spent too.

Let’s say that you worked at Starbucks. You get your paycheck and go to Wal-Mart and spend $100 there. It was still earnings from Starbucks, right? You earned it. If you earn $150 from Avon and spend $100 on Avon products, it’s just as though you spent it at Wal-Mart. It’s totally okay for you to do that – you just need to understand that’s where your earnings went if you can’t see your Avon earnings at the end of the campaign.

If you want to purchase your own products, write yourself a receipt just as though you were a customer. You can give yourself the discount based on your Avon discount if you want. Then you have a record of what you spent, and you can see where you are making money.

Stay Committed

It takes time to build a business of any kind, and Avon is no different. There’s no such thing as get rich quick. It will take probably 3-6 months of doing daily activities to really see your results.

It’s easy to earn a couple hundred dollars a month with Avon, but it requires a solid base.

Sometimes when you first get started, your family and friends will buy from you to help you out. But you can’t depend on them always supporting you. You need to get out there and build a customer base of people who want Avon because they love the products, rather than because they feel they need to help you.

If you don’t see the success you want in your first few campaigns, don’t give up. Keep trying. You’ll get there as long as you stay committed and keep working it every day.

Order More Than 10 Brochures

It takes brochures to get more customers. Your Avon brochure is your store, and it’s hard to sell from a store if you don’t have a brochure to give someone.

If you give out 10 brochures, you may get a couple of orders, but if you’re looking to make money, you want more orders. I suggest getting at least 60-100 brochures each campaign to start.

Make sure you give out every one of them, and then follow up with everyone you gave a brochure to before your order date.

Block Time In Your Calendar To Work Your Business

The great thing about your Avon business is you get to decide how much time you’re going to commit to it. But the key word there is “commit.”

Are you really ‘open’ for business, or are you spending your time running errands, doing laundry, or phoning friends? Figure out how many hours per week that you can allot to your business, and be committed to that time.

Without a set time to get to work, chances are it will never happen.  Block the time in your calendar that you’re going to work your business, just like you would a set appointment.  Yes, it’s THAT important!

Be Resilient and Learn To Roll With The Punches

Many things will happen in your business every day that are outside your control. It’s easy to get frustrated. Maybe your customer didn’t like a product and wants to return it, or the Avon website is down when you need it.

No matter what type of business you are in, you will have challenges. Learn how to let it go and get right back up.

Be Consistent

Being consistent is what will help you grow your business. Every day of doing the right activities builds on the last, and every day your business will get stronger and stronger.

Your potential customers and new team members need to see that you are serious about your business and providing them quality service, and that you’re going to be there for the long term.

Make sure that every customer receives a brochure EVERY campaign. Make sure that you follow-up with every person you gave a brochure EVERY campaign. Make sure you return phone calls, texts, and emails in a timely manner.

Don’t Stock Up on Inventory

One of the benefits of your Avon business is you get to sell out of the brochure – you take the order, and then deliver it to the customer when you receive it from Avon.

It’s easy to want to get all the new products, samples, and products you think will be big sellers, but inventory comes with its own problems.

It’s easy to get in over your head, and now you’re not making money because you have it all tied up with inventory. Avon sometimes makes packaging changes, and you don’t want to be stuck with the old packaging.  Inventory is just not necessary.

Keep Your Vision in Front of You

When things get tough, it’s easy to forget why you even started this Avon business. Challenges will come your way, and sometimes it will just be easier to say, forget it!

Think about why you started your Avon business. You had some reason. Print it out and look at it every day. It will help keep you motivated as you build.

Don’t Quit on a Bad Day

And along those same lines, don’t ever quit on a bad day. If you really want to quit, that’s totally okay, but tell yourself, “Not today” if you’re having a bad day.

Get through the day, and wait until you’re back to having a good day and then make the decision if you still want to quit.
