Why Am I Successful With Avon When Others Struggle?
Sometimes I have people ask me why I’m successful with Avon and why they’re struggling.
I don’t have all the answers either, but today I thought I’d share what I could that might help you.
Success means different things to different people.
If you’re looking to build a big business, I hope this will help you. If you’re looking for some extra money or to get a discount on your Avon products, that’s totally ok too. You get to choose what success means to you.
By no means am I saying I’m more successful than anybody else.
In fact, I walked away from my Avon business for six years, and am now beating myself up over that. My business has really dropped during that time. So today I’m working to rebuild what I had before I walked away.
Before I try to answer this question, I need to share some background information. Before we started with Avon, I was a Marketing Director for a food distributor. We sold food and equipment to restaurants. Richard was a store manager for a large grocery store in California.
Neither of us just happened to fall into those jobs. Our success in the corporate world came from starting at the bottom with everybody else and working hard to prove ourselves, and worked our way into those final jobs.
Maybe that experience gave us the tenacity to stick with it and do what it takes for success, or maybe we already had it in us.
But I believe that every one of us is capable – we just need to get clear with ourselves what it is that we want, and make it happen.
We started selling Avon only to help pay for a square dance website that I had created. It was getting expensive and I needed help paying for it but didn’t want to require memberships to access the website. We thought we would sell to our square dancers as a way to offset those costs.
Along the way, we figured out what a gem we had right there in our hands – with our Avon business. Our business had the capability to give us everything we wanted out of life.
Yes, we had great jobs, but we worked all the time and didn’t have the freedom to do what we wanted.
So then I immediately jumped into it. I started researching everything about how to be successful with Avon. I searched the Internet looking for trainings, tips and suggestions, I paid for and attending generic trainings on how to be successful in a home business, I read books.
And then I put what I learned into action. I still do all those things today.
You have to put in the time to gain the knowledge to be successful, and then that knowledge doesn’t mean anything until you put it into action.
Originally I started with a personal website, and then later transitioned over to a blog. I did not know how to do those things, but I Googled questions, watched YouTube videos… anything I could find to teach me specifically what I was trying to accomplish at that time.
I made a lot of mistakes along the way too. I didn’t – and still don’t – have an upline, and my District Manager wasn’t much help at the time either.
So I made mistakes. But each time I did, I learned. And then next time I did better.
We treat our business like a business. We talk to everyone in some way about Avon. We offer Avon brochures, we wear Avon logo shirts. We work it into the conversation without running people over with it, and then if they’re not interested, that’s totally OK. We let it go.
We have done just about everything we could think of to meet more people. I have stood outside grocery stores and malls and handed out brochures, I have setup Breast Cancer Tables, I have paid for booths in special events. We have invested both time and money to find success in our business.
I think one of the mistakes some people make is they don’t get outside of their own social network. It’s important to start with the people you know because that’s what you have.
But then you need to grow outside that network. You need to find ways to always meet new people to talk to about your business.
Another mistake some people make is they expect instant success. They take any earnings they make and pocket it right away.
They don’t invest back into their business. By not investing in your business, you’re stunting any possible growth. You don’t need a lot of money to build a business, but it is going to take investment – either money or time, or ideally combination of the two.
And while I firmly agree that you need to use Avon products, I would suggest – especially if you’re new – to not go overboard with purchasing products for yourself. Don’t become your own best customer.
Charge yourself for the products you are buying. You can charge yourself at your discount if you want, but remember you’re going to buy those products anyway, whether you buy from Avon or somewhere else. Don’t allow your earnings to get sucked up in your personal purchases.
And one last mistake some people make is they don’t give it enough time. They give up after just a couple of campaigns, and they never got out of their personal network.
Your friends will buy from you in the beginning just to help you out, but you can’t expect them to stick with you. Some will because they love Avon products and the value you have to offer, but many won’t. It’s just the way it is.
If you look at all of the top Avon Representatives, you’ll probably find the same pattern.
They didn’t make a lot of money at first in their business because they invested their earnings back into the business. But they stuck with it, they stayed consistent and didn’t give up, and eventually they become top Avon Representatives.
The old saying that you get out of it as much as you put into it is so very true in your Avon business. It won’t be handed to you on a silver platter. You have to work for it.
But both Richard and I agree that the Avon opportunity is a great one!
As I mentioned earlier in this article, we walked away from our Avon business for 6 years. That was probably the biggest mistake we’ve made so far. We tried other companies during that time, and that experience has reinforced for us that Avon is where we are meant to be.
We are here for the long haul and are not going anywhere.
And we’re willing to help anyone who wants success and is willing to work for it, whether you’re actually on our team or not. We know you can do it!

Love all your inspirational posts. Right now I’m just in Avon for me and my daughter. I am very slowly learning how to use technology to share Avon. I’ve used your wisdom in other areas of my life. You’re a natural born counselor. Thank you, Lynn Wronosky
